Elections
So far Democrats have won the house, and may still take over the Senate.
While I don’t think the Democrats deserve to control either house, the Republicans certainly deserve to lose control of both houses.
The sad thing about this election is the shift in power isn’t because the Democrats are so great, it’s because the Republicans have been so incredibly stupid in how they’ve spent the substantial political capital they once had. They made other mistakes too, but the biggest was “Hey we have both houses and the president so we can do whatever we want. woohoo!!” Then they alienated moderates and burned bi-partisan bridges by pushing an overly conservative agenda, and didn’t even use their newfound power to fix some things that really needed fixing.
Any chance at fixing social security is now gone. And the Republicans just bent over on immigration reform, what was up with that? And what’s with all the spending? Spending money is the Democrats’ job–they’re very good at that and Republicans are in a much better position when they let Democrats spend and then point at them saying “Look how much they’re spending!”. But you just look like an idiot if you do that while $100 bills are falling out of your back pockets.
I feel like I owe Matt Drudge some money for all the bandwidth I used clicking “reload” tonight…

Matt, the real problem was the fact that the Republicans at the top in Washington were NOT governing in a conservative manner. This is precisely the reason why some conservatives did not vote Republican this year. I like your summarization that the Democrats did not win because they were great but because the Republicans at the top were not leading in a conservative manner.
I feel compelled to point out that under the Republican majority for the last 12 years, the economy (including the days in the mid-90s) has been great, nigh fantastic. The tax cuts by George Bush have worked better than the opposition dares to admit. Have you seen the Dow Jones? The index points have hit nearly record breaking highs in this year alone. National security is good, if not great. Unemployment is at an ALL TIME LOW of 4.4%. Of course, you did not hear any of that in the mainstream media. Lets wait and see how long it takes for the Democrats to start grabbing credit for all that.
The Republicans with the immigration issue is a little more complex than you are putting it. President Bush, for whatever his reasons, wanted to sign the Amnesty for Immigrants bill, however the Republican members of the House and Senate did not. The only reason that Bill has not already been pass is precisely because the House and Senate Republicans bucked their own president (which is very difficult to do) and voted no on the bill. Now with Democrats in power, we can be certain of that bill passing. They, and President Bush, were the ones pushing for it.
About the current Republican spending, I cannot argue with you there. That is one of the reasons the Republican base was so displeased and voted Democrat this time around. On the flip side, I fear what tax increases that are in the future for our nation. Equally I fear what millions, if not billions, of dollars will be spent in investigations of members of the Republican party (and George Bush), by the Democrat house Majority. If you want to see rampant spending with a poor political agenda, watch for those moves.
Honestly, I weep for my nation, but I pray to God and ask Him to bless us.
