Excellent review! Many people do not know about the file exclusions with Carbonite and do not find out about it until it is too late. As mentioned by Jonathon above Backblaze has been gaining a following for consumer backup. They do make it easy for non-techies to get an online backup running by backing up everything (minus OS files).

To address this issue, we use multiple servers that reside in two separate data centers, and they continually sync with each other. So even if one data center would meet with disaster, we have a redundant copy elsewhere.

I’ve been using Backblaze for a few months now and am quite happy with it. However, I haven’t had to restore anything major yet so I can’t say how that works.

$5 a month per computer, unlimited bandwidth.
