Monday: Yacht Club Meeting. Ugh. I don’t want to talk about it. Anyway…so after the meeting I called Becky and she was with Barbara and they wanted to come to dinner with us afterwards. I think the meeting must have really messed with my head, because in my right mind I would never have inflicted the Washington Yacht Club upon two nice girls. Anyway, so a couple weeks ago I’d mentioned to the Yacht Club folks that I’d been hanging out with this nice, cute girl, but I didn’t know where it was going…of course, the Yacht Club, being the Yacht Club, decided that she’s my girlfriend. So I show up with Becky and Barbara and everyone is like “Oh so this must be your imaginary girlfriend and mistress (mistress referring to Barbara)”. I’m not sure how Barbara felt about being my mistress, but Becky seemed to be OK with being my girlfriend…so now she is. Yeah, so in case you didn’t catch that, Matt has a girlfriend, and she’s not imaginary (and I don’t have a mistress…the Yacht Club is just stupid).
Becky later informed me that she and Barbara set me up, figuring something like this would happen. Clever girls.
Tuesday: Went to Math section, ate lunch with Becky, walked with her to the Forest Resources payroll office so I could laugh at the payroll people (my experience with payroll coordinators from working at C&C has lead me to believe that they are highly trained monkeys, but the Forest Resources lady was far more competent that I expected…I was sure they all drooled…). I hung out with Becky on the HUB lawn for a little while and the went to class so she could actually get some reading done.
Went with Becky and Barbara the U-village to study…and Barbara promptly ditched us to go to a vegetarian restaurant with Tammy (for shame…vegetarian food…ick).

Saturday: Slept in. Internet was down so I drove to campus so I could work. Went to the WAC, helped the Vice Commodore put the motor on our new whaler (since when do the top two officers install outboards?)…it seemed like half the tools we needed were missing from the shop…I had to go to the hardware store at one point. Sometime during the morning I got a text message from Becky wishing me a happy birthday, and then another one several hours later.
Preston was in town and he was arranging dinner and a Star Wars viewing. Preston and Barbara showed up at the WAC around 6:30, and we went to the House to pick up Levi and Jeremy, then we proceeded to Gorditos (yummy Mexican place). Gorditos has huge burritos for cheap. I ate an entire grande burrito…which was really impressive, but that is way too much food, even for me.
Parking at the theater was a pain, but we managed to all sit together…in the very front row, but that was OK. Jeremy said he felt like he was watching tennis the whole movie. Becky sent me another happy birthday text message right before the movie started (three in one day…I feel special ;-)). People are undoubtedly going to want to know what I thought of the movie…I’m not sure…ask me later. After the movie some of us were craving juice so we went to QFC and then to the House, where we proceeded to play taboo and then sit around talking for an hour or so, that’s when I remembered that great quote from Levi that appears in the previous entry.
Sunday:Slept in until 11:00. Internet was still down so it was off to campus again. Went to Taco Del Mar for lunch…the Ave was a mess from that silly street fair thing. Went home…it looked like there was wind so I considered going sailing but I was too lazy, so I took a nap instead. Ross got back that evening and said I missed some killer sailing…grrr….

Someone is bugging me to update again. I wonder who?
Wednesday: I don’t remember…I think I was supposed to do some studying, but didn’t really. Bad Matt.
Thursday: Math midterm. Went OK…could have been better, but could have been worse, too. Lunch at Costas. I am so bad for Becky’s eating habits.
Went to odegaard, listened to a guy snoring, then I went to class. After class I went to Starbucks with David, a guy I used to work with. Then Becky and Becky showed up and I distracted them from studying for a little bit, but decided I needed to finish working on a boat, so I left….just as it started pouring buckets of rain. I was quite wet by the time I got the WAC. Pressure tested the catamaran hull…there was still a pinhole leak in the hull/deck seam, so I patched that and trudged back to upper campus (the rain had stopped) for nuts and bolts (UCF Bible Study type thing). We talked about prayer and that was cool. After that I went to my swing dance class and then proceeded to go home and go to bed.
Friday: I went to Orange King for lunch…I love double bacon cheeseburgers.
Lunch was followed by work, which was followed by coffee with Becky and then Core. After Core I helped Becky move some stuff from her dorm to her car, so she could take it home this weekend. UCF at 7:00–it was good. After-event was the talent/no-talent show…but first Drew and I and our entourage of Dan Ahn and Trevor needed to stop by Dick’s to get burgers (I think this has become a tradition…). Once we were stocked up on cheap, greasy, yummy burgers, we headed to Dan Segars’ house (he’s out of town…perfect place for a party) to watch the fun. Drew was emceeing the show and it was pretty amusing…
Saturday: I’ve been up for a couple hours…it’s my birthday–don’t forget to get me something nice.

The Christian is not a homo religiosus but simply a man as Jesus (in distinction from John the Baptist) was a man…Not the flat and banal ‘This-sidedness’ of the Enlightened, of the deep ‘This-sidedness’ which is full of discipline and in which the knowledge of the Death and Resurrection is always present, this is what I mean. When a man really gives up trying to make something of himself–a saint, or a converted sinner, or a churchman (a so-called clerical somebody), a righteous or unrighteous man,…when in the fullness of tasks, questions, success or ill-hap, experiences and perplexities, a man throws him into the arms of God…then he awakes with Christ in Gethsemane. That is faith, that is metanoia and it is thus that he becomes a man and a Christian. How can a man wax arrogant if in a this-sided life he shares the suffering of God?

Work, class, bother Becky for an hour. Work…bother both Becky’s for a couple hours.
Tuesday
Class, bother Becky for a few hours…class…putter around for an hour…go to calculus review session. Yeah, so about the calculus review session–I left 40 minutes into it because it was annoying. I mean…I can understand that they were working on a cool problem…but darnit, that’s not going to be on the midterm…and they should have been spending more time doing practical problems. Don’t get me started…

Saturday
I went to campus intending to work and study. (no laughing). Anyway…I ended up not studying, and spending all my time trying to fill out my parking ticket appeal form (which I still need to finish…). I was planning on going to Golden Gardens later in the day–Barbara was throwing a party to celebrate her friend Candace (sp?) visiting from Tennessee. But…instead of just going I ended up being the taxi service, but that was fine. Later on I got lo…errr, explored downtown Ballard with Becky while we were trying to find a grocery store….
Saturday evening
Swing dancing. I need lots more practice. Becky and Gen are very tolerant. Yay for them.
Sunday
…This part of the entry is going to make me look bad no matter how I put it….
I got a call today that the wind was good, so I decided to go sailing. Which was nice…but it got me in trouble. See…apparently Becky and I agreed that she would call me sometime before 2:30 so we could take her car door apart and fix it (it wouldn’t open from the inside). Unfortunately, this never registered with me, so I was just planning to call her when I got back from sailing (probably around 3:00). Yeah…so by the time I got back from sailing I had nasty messages left for me on pretty much every method of communication…
Anyway, after about half an hour she started speaking to me again and I walked to Terry (her dorm) and we drove to the Waterfront Activities Center (in case we needed tools from the shop…). So then I was trying to figure out how to take the door apart and flipped the child safety lock switch…yeah, so that was why the door didn’t open from the inside. I’m so good at fixing things, I amaze even myself.
After the brilliant exhibition of my mechanical genius we walked around the WAC area for a while, and Becky discovered a climbing wall and was very excited.

Monday: Ummm…Class, work. I had dinner with the two Beckys, and generally ate way too much. Then there was a yacht club meeting and I wanted to die by the time it was over.
Tuesday: Class. Studying with Becky in the U-village. Becky told me I should eat bananas and granola bars throughout the day, instead of one or two giant meals. Ok, so that’s not exactly what she said…but it’s close. I suspect I will get nasty letters about that one.
Wednesday: Class. Work. I had a banana and a frappuccino at some point during the morning. I also had two granola bars. Note to self: Becky is a bad influence on me. Also, Trevor (see quote two entries ago) got a haircut. I can’t recognize him anymore.
Thursday: In progress.

Saturday was Opening Day of boating season here in Seattle. The Seattle yacht Club is the sponsor of the event, and they invite all the Commodores from area yacht clubs to participate in the opening/closing ceremonies. So, even though the Washington Yacht Club is hardly a real yacht club, I still got invited. Anyway, I figured it might be kind of fun so I got the proper attire together and attended. Yeah…so I now own a pair of white oxfords, which I’ll probably never wear again. Anyway…so I went to breakfast and I was like, “huh, I’m the youngest person here by at least 20 years…”. After breakfast was the commissioning ceremony where they raise the American flag and the burgees from all the attending yahct clubs. The American Flag was raised by Navy ROTC people from UW, so they were probably close to my age, but I was definitely the youngest Commodore there…it was kind of weird…I was always half-expecting someone to say to me “ok, who are you really, and why are you here?” There were a lot of VIPs at the commissioning ceremony (Seattle mayor, police chief, UW president), but I didn’t get to meet any of them.
After the SYC stuff I walked (yes, still dressed up) to the Waterfront Activities Center at UW, where we were having our own opening day party. It’s only a 15 minute walk…but I’m sure I was quite the spectacle. We had burgers and chips and cake and stuff, and I managed to eat lunch without getting anything on my white pants or shirt.
After our party I took a nap on the couch in the conference room, then headed back to SYC for the “Commodore’s Reception” and closing ceremony. So yeah…they know how to do food over there. Bacon wrapped scallops are really good. I want some. If you know how to make them, please tell me!
Sunday I had lunch at Azteca with Preston and some other folks with UCF since he was heading back to wherever it is that he comes from.
Then I went home for Mother’s day and had dinner with the family…at Azteca.
Oh yeah, there are pictures of me dressed up for opening day…I’ll update this entry with a link when I get them posted in a permanent location.

Right…so, I’ve decided I don’t care. There’s so much junk in blogs out there these days, that someome needs to effect a net increase in the quality of internet writing. I’ve decided that job falls to me. I am so full of myself…
Weekend. Yeah. So there was a UCF retreat–we went to Panhandle Lake, which is somewhere near Shelton. I decided to drive myself since I didn’t want to be stuck in the van with a bunch of people that weren’t as cool as me.
I did manage to nab Kyle from the van to keep me company. We had some good conversations in the car on the way down, and we had fun trying to find the KFC in shelton. Kyle is very interested in the finer points of doctrines and apologetics–he reminds me of me 3 years ago before I more or less burned out thinking about such things–I really didn’t feel like I was making any progress, or that I could cram enough knowledge in my head to make any intelligent analyses. I hope that doesn’t happen to Kyle, we need people with that sort of thirst for truth.
At the retreat. Yeah, so the subject was eschatology, and those of you with small vocabularies can find the definition of that word here. In our context were covering the book of Revelation, tribulation, second coming of Christ, all that good stuff.
Fun stuff we did:
Ultimate Chicken (Think Ultimate Frisbee, but replace the frisbee with a rubber chicken)
Drew pushed me into the lake…
Swimming in the lake and making people fall off logs…
Any now my commentary on deep/thoughtful matters:
I might have liked to see the book of Daniel talked about more in the context of Revelation–I think I only heard the name of the book mentioned once, and no analaysis of the contents. On the other hand…there may not have been time to get into that. Dan segars gave an interpretation of the abomination that causes desolation mentioned in Daniel and Revelation that I hadn’t heard before. At least I don’t think I had; it’s been a while…I’ll have to see if I can find some time to look into that.
I was interested to learn that pre/post/a-millenialism are relatively recent theological inventions. Apparently there were other schools of thought before these came around. I know that some people will get really bent out of shape on the pre/post/a-millenialism and pre/post/mid-tribulation, but I don’t have a really strong opinion on the matter–I think it’s important to try to discover what the truth is, but these particular doctrines are not worth any nasty arguments over, in my opinion. I don’t think Jesus is going to say “Gee, you were a great Christian, but you got your end-times theology wrong…off to hell with you now.” Yeah…I’m pretty sure that’s not happening.
Also, the rapture was almost entirely glossed over. Again, I don’t have a really strong opinion on any of this stuff, but some analysis would have been nice.
Ok, I just realized I’ve been sounding really critical. I don’t mean to be, and there was a lot of good teaching and discussion. However, I think that since I’d heard enough of this before to know that there’s a lot I don’t know, I was hoping to get a lot of the gaps filled in. But I guess the purpose of the retreat was more to think about how these topics should affect our lives as Christians than to fill our heads with a bunch of academic knowledge (academic knowledge is so much easier…but that’s a topic for another day…). I suppose looking at it from that perspective, I don’t have any criticisms, and in fact most of this was over my head.
Anyway, so it was a good weekend and I had fun and learned some stuff.
Ok, it’s become painfully obvious to me that my writing skills are pretty rusty…ugh…

So if you’ve ridden in my car lately you may have noticed the the vise sitting in the back of my car. Well, it’s gone now!! When I got home yesterday, Ross and Abi were having Terrence (former roommate, and owner of the fabled vise) and his girlfriend over for dinner, so I finally got to get rid of the silly thing. Yay!! It’s the little things that make me happy…
One less vise in my life…hahahahaha…oh, I am so not funny…and if you laughed at that you should go sit in the corner for 15 minutes and think about what you’ve done.

I’m debating whether or not I should comment on my weekend. I’m hesitant to do so because if I do, it means I’ve become a real blogger and I will be filled with self-loathing. On the other hand, it was a good weekend….
